How to Talk to People Who Disagree with You Politically

Check out the study here.

The Research

This study, researched by the co-directors of Project Divided and the University of Texas at Austin's Center for Media Engagement, investigated how people--with different political views--actually talk to one another.

By interviewing people across the country, who live in communities with a mix of political beleifs, we were able to identify strategies people use to discuss politics during a time of hyper-polarization.

The Findings

We found five different approaches that people use when talking with those with whom they disagree with politically. The strategies include:

    • Focus on the people, not the politics
    • Find common ground
    • Stick to the facts and avoid confrontation
    • Be an advocate, rather than an opponent
    • Pick your battles
