Smithville is a small town, of approximately 4,000 people, in a rural county of Central Texas. In a town this small, people ask questions—especially when you’re the new kid in town, and especially when they find out that you want to talk politics. The most frequent questions that we receive have ranged from, “So why did you move to Texas?” to, “Do you really not want to change people’s minds?” to, “No really, how did you end up in Smithville?” From our work of talking to anyone and everyone interested in speaking with us, we’re now frequently referred to around town as ‘those girls who talk to people’.

Polarization affects everything from our health and stress levels to the loss of trust in our government and institutions.

Polarization is not the same as disagreement. Polarization means refusing to live next to a neighbor who doesn't share our politics and listening only to news channels that reinforce our own political views. Polarization is where "negotiation and compromise are perceived as betrayal" and when we cluster ourselves in groups that compete against each rather than working together for the common good.
